Een tijd later, toen hij een klein bandje had, probeerde hij aan de bak te komen bij een platenmaatschappij. Zijn eerste keren werd hij afgewezen omdat ze liedjes hadden die te veel op bestaande liedjes leken. Toch werd hij gevraagd om nog wat meer te schrijven.  Toen lukte het hem wel om de maatschappij ervan te overtuigen dat hij toch wel goed was. Na zijn eerste hit (Hey Porter,  http://youtube.com/watch?v=0Sy5YkmpG64) werd de naam van de band veranderd in The Tenessee Two. Voortaan stonden ze bekend als Johnny Cash and The Tenessee Two. Zijn (of hun) derde lied I Walk The Line deed het heel goed in de Amerikaanse hitlijsten. Na nog enkele hits besloot Johnny er een drummer bij te nemen en werd het Johnny Cash and The Tenessee Three. Door zijn succes raakte hij verslaafd aan drugs en drank. Toch bleef hij populair bij het publiek maar moest toch enkele malen de gevangenis in omdat hij drug smokkelde en dealde en een keer werd aangetroffen (stoned) met drugs in zijn gitaarkoffer. na een ruzie met de platenmaatschappij verliet hij Amerika en ging naar een andere maatschappij. Nadat een vriendin van hem van de drank af had geholpen scheidde hij van zijn 2de vrouw en trouwde met June Carter. Na nog een wisseling van platenmaatschappij bracht hij weer veel nummers uit. Nadat hij in 2003 overleed (mede door zijn zeer ongezonde levensstijl werden nog enkele niet-uitgebrachte nummers alsnog uitgebracht. In zijn hele leven heeft Johnny Cash meer dan 1500 liedjes geschreven.

In 2006 kwam een verfilming van zijn leven uit, Walk The Line, waarin (vind ik) zeer geod wordt weergegeven hoe hij heeft geleefd. In Nederland is deze film nooit vertoond.

Hij kende Elvis goed, en was samen met Elvis de best verkopende artiest van ongeveer 1970. Toch kennen vel mensen hem niet omdat zijn grote doorbraak alleen in Amerika was.

Hitlijsten:

Johnny Cash stond met I Walk The Line 6 weken op nummer 1 in de Amerikaanse hitlijsten in 1956. Dit was zeker zijn hoogste notering ooit. Verder hebben heel veel van zijn liedjes ooit wel in de hitlijsten gestaan, maar een betrouwbare lijst is hier niet van te vinden. Hij was een van de populairste countryzangers ooit.
